Best CHEAP new car in Australia? - MG 3 petrol review | MG MG3 review 2024 (ICE)
The new-generation MG 3 has hybrid power. But what about the petrol model, which is $4000 cheaper?! Subscribe here: www.youtube.com/@therightcar?sub_confirmation=1--
In this review, I'll tell you whether it might actually be a better buy for you -- or whether shelling out more for the petrol-electric Hybrid+ model is actually worth the money.
If you haven't seen my NEW 2024 MG MG3 Hybrid+ review, check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/usR1vWHlf8g/v-deo.html
The new-generation version of the MG 3 is more expensive by a fair amount, with petrol models starting at just under $24,000 plus on-road costs this time around. Previously you could get an MG 3 auto from $18,990 drive-away!
So is the new car that much better than before? In short, yes. If you want to see what I thought of the old MG 3, check out that review here: ua-cam.com/video/9kLy7ryNGHY/v-deo.html
So, if you're not sold on the MG 3, what else could you consider?

Kia Sportage Hybrid 2024 GT-Line review (HEV)
I test drove the new 2024 Picanto GT-Line as an automatic back in April. Great little car. The gearbox was fine, would have been nice to drive the manual too. It did kind of run out of puff going up an on-ramp to a major arterial but it got there, it was with two in the car (me and the saleswoman). Parking was super-easy, and it just felt good to drive. When I booked the test-drive, I was wanting to buy a Picanto, but when the test-drive came around I had secured a fantastic second hand car so I didn't end up buying a Picanto - if I did, I would have gone for the Sport, with a 5-speed manual, which most likely would have had to have been ordered, because all stock coming in at the time were all automatic. The Picanto was pretty much the only new car I looked at, due to price yeah, but also because I really really liked it.
Easy suspension up grade would fix alot of the problems
I thought they will be updating the design of the dashboard. In other countries, nissan have placed the same dash as the terra.
No split rear seat, welcome to the 1970s technology in a 2024 model car Fuel economy quite poor by modern standards.. I will take the Kia Picanto thanks..
God. You need a new camera man that doesn't move around
Mom got the Techno Plus in the UK and I have to admit I was a bit aghast at her choice but ultimatly it suited her lifestyle which was local journeys and she has a 7KW home charger so charges to 80% overnight at the cheapest rate and the range has been decent, so low cost on the electricity front. Once I took it out for a drive, I was more than impressed as it handles so well more so like an ICE car with enough powewr to have some fun. Great road holding and the interior is excellent especially the Google operating system that they have moved to. It is a blast in the sport mode though I would not tell her that! Yes the space in the back is not huge but for a family with 2 kids it's perfect...Not an EV fan at all as we seem to being pushed in that direction without really thinking of the infrastructure and the fact the hybrids should have been a more focused option until said infrastructure was in place...still overall, I was very impressed and it looks great too...
It seems like a seasoned design engineer designed the front section, and the rear was designed by a graduate when the senior engineer was on leave.
The revving up of the engine is a really bummer....
Wow...not a single word of appreciation or positive statements towards the car. Not mentioning built quality and premium material used.. no words about double gazed glass installed and noise cancallation featute for driving environment.. not mentioning about the practically or space that the cabin provided..wow just 1 way traffic for a car review. 😂
Pretty arrogant of MG
5 years ago in China's route 318 (sort of like cape york track with minus 0 temperature and 5000m height low oxigen) all the car you saw is toyota land cruiser, prado etc. Today they are almost disappeared and instead today all you see is thousands of tank 300, tank 500 and GWM ute.
xc60 is the sweet spot
Thanks for keeping your reviews really and reviewing the out going model and new one. Unlike the main stream car reviewers.
Over rated

Just because it can tow 3.5t doesn’t mean you should Never make the cart heavier than the horse
New shocks, 500kg leafs and load distribution and 300-400kg in the tub under a canopy...oh and a 3.2 upticked diesel please.
Don't you talk to many mechanics Matt? Previous gen MG3 are absolutely rubbish they tell me.
Shame about the CVT. For that price rise, they should have updated the auto transmission.
That real world fuel efficiency is very concerning.
I think that the drivers display panel for speed would be better with a cover over it. I had a mini which was the same and with the sun it effected the vision when driving. I imagine it will be even worse with a sunroof. It wouldn't have cost MG much especially with the price rise that should have been included. Even all of the new picanto models has a cover over the drivers display. But it's a great video like normal first class 👍.
Thanks Matt I may have just found the perfect car for my elderly mother. This will be a monumental step up from the 2000 nissan pulsar she currently drives which is on its last legs. $23990 will suit our budget perfectly.
That pulsar will outlast this mg. Why is it on “it’s last legs”?
@@superwag634 it’s burning oil like no tomorrow. It has 225,000 Ks on it. The auto is slipping like mad. So it’s time to upgrade she has been asking me for a few months what to get.
get a picanto, tried and tested/bulletproof driveline and will probably outlast an mg3
I recently helped an elderly relative buy a new car - and found that she was put off by the digital drivers display and infotainment. It was all a bit too digital. In the end we stepped back, and bought a fairly recent secondhand car (a Kia Cerato) with less obvious tech features (i.e. a conventional dashboard and heating/cooling/demisting controls), and with a few years of warranty. Plus we saved a decent amount of cash. Interestingly enough, the Kia Cerato real world economy is similar to the MG3 in this review.
@@zzz-pe3mp she doesn’t like the Kia after test driving it.
I am enjoying your reviews thank you.
Tell the people that Ute is a 3 leaf set up the glx plus is 4 leaf set up
You just did.
the fact that it's chinese is the reason i wouldn't buy one.. scared of it falling apart when the coverage expires 🤣
Nobody buys this new and keeps it for eight years. It will be some teenagers problem then 😆
@@superwag634 haha true
The large wheel likely to enable view of front screen? A piece of tape fixes the startup disable annoyances procedure. Works for an outlander.
It looks like a blowfish, drives poorly as the normally aspirated and hybrid version, has a hilariously bad single fold rear seat, small boot and its expensive. Just awful.
We need an EV MG3.
Car reviewers complain of not enough basic safety. When basic safety gets put in, they then complain about the price lol. Not aimed at you Matt
and annoying to either to off it before going and intrusive while driving
too much money no history its chinese
I'm old enough to remember when people used to say the same thing about Japanese cars.
no history MG has been around in Aus for over 5years they are considered as mainstream and some MGs are the biggest selling cars in there segment
had a test drive of an excite hybrid today, and for the most part, your review is spot on, Matt. There are a few oddities I encountered. First, the fuel economy when starting is quite high, the computer shows 18.9l/100 which over a 28 minute suburban loop of 13kms dropped down to 6.5l/100. Not sure if this was your observation as well. Second, I found the legroom in the back quite terrible with not much space for your feet as there was a weird hump just below the driver's seat. Must have been the amplifier for the sound system?. Lastly, the performance even at suburban speeds was inconsistent...meaning 0-60kmph of traffic lights could be really brisk if the battery was fully charged, and could tend to lethargic if the battery was depleted. On the plus side, if the battery is fully charged and with a light foot, the car will drive in EV mode up to 58kmph. It was also impressively refined but the petrol engine when it was buzzing was noisy enough to bother me. It is streets ahead of the car I want to replace...my honda jazz, but the jazz absolutely wallops it in terms of rear seat space. I think I am going to have to hold on to the jazz despite it being a much poorer car than the MG3 in general (other than the space of course). MG have well and truly arrived. this new car is definitely superbly put together and well engineered. People have to drive it and form their impressions rather than assume automatically that Toyota Yaris >>> MG3 btw, John Law from carsguide seems to have had a much worse experience in the car as compared to you. Perhaps the calibration of these demo cars is not the same across the board?
Thanks mate. Good findings. And thanks for sharing them! And I’ll say this about John Law (he and I are mates), he came from Wheels. If you drive a hybrid city car like a journo from Wheels, you might end up with alarming findings. This is not a hot hatch and shouldn’t be considered one. I drove it how I expect the VAST MAJORITY of people will. But having said that, other journos have had issues with the hybrid system - but all of them are heavy-footed.
@therightcar Thanks Matt. I thought of a couple of other points as well. In the excite grade, I found the front seats to be really comfy, but the rear seat was oddly not so comfy. The PU steering wheel in the non-essence models is fine, there is some sort of micro-grooves or something that makes it quite grippy to hold, and finally, the ELK didnt bother me much, i found it's nudges made me focus on staying centered in the lane :) Oh and lastly, today was a rainy day, and I did notice that the wipers squeaked a lot when operating at the 2 setting. Got annoying after a while. also, what car seat are you using for your daughter? it seems to be less reclined, thereby giving her more space to swing her legs behind the front passenger seat - probably is a better car seat for compact cars than a maxi cosi
Would save the 4K and spend in on other Chinese made goods😅. Win win.
Haha
Same price as a Tesla! Both rubbish!
What Tesla? A crashed one at a wreckers??
How about a Holden? Maybe you should drive a captiva and a cruze
You mean Craptiva? They got that nick name for a reason lol
If you look closely at an over priced Hilux, the Triton beats it in every way. A Toyota is a step back in time 20 years with a pathetic array of design and less features than a dessert, hugely reliant on cheap plastic and paper thin metal and the lack of ride comfort is quiet remarkable. Ford have killed themselves off with that pitiful 2.0 motor. Rock on triton.
Triton is a lot nicer to live with day to day than a HiLux.
I took a 2022 Ultra for a test drive today. Features: great, but annoying menu system on the touch screen. Steering felt light too. More frustrating was the lack of power from a standing start, the responsiveness was shocking with it taking quite a few seconds to get up to speed. Shame really, because other than the things above, it's actually not a bad car.
This dude is consistently and utterly obsessed with led headlights.
I am. Because being able to see, and people being able to see you, is important. More important than stupid lane keeping tech, in my opinion.
Nah, halogen is so much better, especially when they blow often and you do not realise it when you get your annual safety check done and it fails! Have you noticed utes are the best at losing a rear tail light, they just love blowing bulbs! It's extremely rare to see a blown head or LED tail light
Driving outside the city with halogen headlights is plain dangerous when oncoming cars have LED headings.
I like the colour and the exterior look of it, it looks like a baby version of the MG4. But I wouldn't buy one.
This colour suits it really nicely!
doesn't seem to be a reliable car
Thanks Matt, your reviews are consistently balanced and wise. My wife has a Yaris Hybrid on back order but I don't think we we will cancel the order for the MG Hybrid or petrol version. They certainly seem to be improving but!
Thanks mate. Hope your Yaris comes soon!
Yaris still wins on efficiency. Yaris city claimed 2.8lt per 100km. MG3 hybrid claimed 4.3lt per 100km. Highway Yaris claimed 3.6lt per 100km MG3 hybrid, a very poor claimed 6.3lt per 100km! Yaris 91 octane fuel MG3 hybrid 95!! That 1980s non fold rear seat is so stupid! Stick to the Yaris!
cant even put the indicaters on the correct side for australia and hate piano black and fingerprints
Yep, the indicator thing is annoying.
The more Tech the more chance of any age drivers taking their eyes off the road.
I guess… but also, this isn’t the first car with lots of tech.
wtf a bench back seat no split 60-40 rear seat really how old of a design is this
Yep it’s a poor choice.
Structurally it is stronger, but you may not notice it on the way to Coles.
Yep, not the best car to take a friend in the back with a set of golf clubs or any other long item!
After seeing other reviews it seems the hybrid has a serious issue with the battery running out of power very quickly under hard acceleration. Imagine this happening in the middle of an overtaking manoeuvre. The NA version is a much better option
I didn’t have any issues with the hybrid I tested. But I wasn’t driving it like a motoring journalist. Hahahaha
Don't disagree, but it's interesting this doesn't seem to get mentioned with other hybrids, so it's not clear if the MG is better or worse than other brands.
Hills shows the problem with the hybrid and, of course, 95 octane petrol! As well the petrol version uses less fuel at highway speeds
How much is the price of Hybrid plus on road cost?
It’s $76,210 plus on-roads. $80k at least, drive-away.
MV Triton better choice than these.
Won’t go as far off-road straight of the showroom floor. But yep, it’s a very compelling choice.
When people complain the fuel economy, the difference in price between this and the equivalent diesel LandCruiser will buy you almost 90,000km worth of fuel at $2.25/litre and 20l/100kms. And that's before factoring in the more expensive servicing modern diesels require.
I think it’s a great value. Latest tech and brand new with 7 years warranty.
Yes please off road test
SL with LED headlights and a manual gearbox.
Would be ideal 🙏🙏🙏
